MINUTES
A retreat of the Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board was scheduled to be held at 10:00 a.m. at the District Support Services Center in Tempe, Arizona, pursuant to A.R.S. ยง38-431.02, notice having been duly given.

CALL TO ORDER
The board retreat was called to order at 10:20 a.m. by Governing Board President Colleen Clark.
I. Welcome & Purpose
Board President Colleen Clark welcomed all board members and talked about the purpose of the meeting.
II. Discussion Topics
A. Board Self-Evaluation
The board reviewed the responses to each question. The board discussed each question in the board self-evaluation addressing the following: (a) reviewed question asking how we could do better; (b) reviewed problems we need to address; (c) determined if the question was helpful and if should keep the question as part of the board self-evaluation; (d) determined if we should re-word the question. The board president is collecting the questions to be changed or to be eliminated and will have the changes to the board self-evaluation made.
The board member specialization was addressed during the board self-evaluation. Board members specialization means: Each board member will have one or more topics of specialization for the purpose of being knowledgeable in that area and in sharing the information with the rest of the board.
During Board Self-Evaluation, board members discussed they would like follow-up at another board meeting or retreat on the following items: 1. Review MCCCD policies on hiring in-state and hiring out of state. 2. Reviewing MCCCD policies at each board meeting as required by state law. 3. Reviewing tests required for faculty and determining if the tests are required for out of state hires. 4. Board members asked the question: Students are required to test for math, reading and English. Do they also have to test for Spanish courses or other courses and is the same testing required for all schools in the district. 5. Review contracts for bookstores; are private bookstores affecting the cost of books for students and are private bookstores giving back to the community? 6. How can the board get better feedback from students?
B. Learning Module on Speed of Trust
This board item was taken off the agenda.
C. FY 2009-10 Budget
The board discussed and reviewed budget items and administration pay reductions. The board president will put the administration pay reductions on the board agenda for April 28th, 2009.
D. Board Calendar
Agenda items are to be given to board president Colleen Clark.
