Before serving as the CIO for the Maricopa Community Colleges, Dr. Koan was appointed as an Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) on the district's Transformation team and prior to that served as the AVC of Infrastructure and Customer Care for the district IT team, where he was responsible for the strategic and operational direction of Maricopa's enterprise information technology infrastructure and customer care divisions. He provided leadership and coordination for all aspects of Maricopa's district-wide infrastructure including servers, storage, databases, backups, virtualization, patch management, data centers, operations monitoring, and LAN/WAN communications. He also led the customer care team which provided help desk, desktop support and audio-visual services.
Previously, Dr. Koan was the CIO at Phoenix College, where he provided strategic leadership for comprehensive IT services at the college including help desk, desktop/classroom support, application development, information security, servers & system support, virtualization, storage, backups, disaster recovery, database administration, wired & wireless networking, unified communications, digital signage, web development, event support, and video production. While there, Dr. Koan and his team built the first highly-available services at PC, designed and installed state-of-the-art technology solutions for construction projects involving more than 200,000 sq. ft. of space, and won the Innovation of the Year Award for the Maricopa Community Colleges.
Prior to working for the Maricopa Community Colleges, Dr. Koan was an IT Director at Arizona State University. In addition to leading the IT team for ASU's West campus, he directed teams responsible for customer support, security, identity management, and training across the university. He also helped develop and advance strategic alliances for ASU's University Technology Office -- including work with industry partners such as Google and Amazon.
Dr. Koan has spoken at national conferences on a variety of topics including innovation and student success, IT collaboration, security, and project management. He has also been published and has a broad teaching background that includes secondary, post-secondary, graduate and overseas courses covering a wide range of subjects.
